Why did Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson and James Robinson receive the 2024 Nobel Prize in Economics? In what way has their research influenced the theories of economic development?
This lecture by Associate Professor Jeanet Sinding Bentzen offers a comprehensive explanation of the laureates’ contributions and their importance to literature. Attendees will learn why their theories and their empirical research on institutions and economic growth are seminal.
The event is increasingly relevant in a time when countries around the world face challenges including higher levels of economic inequality and the vulnerability of political institutions. The laureates' research offers insights into the process of economic development and the consequences of political decisions in the long run.
Jeanet Sinding Bentzen will summarize the key findings from Acemoglu, Johnson, and Robinson’s work and she will argue that their research has something significant to say about today’s economic issues. Their research shows that strong institutions are vital for the prosperity of a nation.
